The Texas Folklore Society will hold its 102nd Annual Meeting in Lubbock, Texas on April 6-8, 2018. There will be many diverse topics covered in the papers during Saturday's sessions. In addition to freedom colonies, horny toads, jam sessions and picking circles, searching for lost treasure, and door-to-door tombstone sales, we'll also be treated to a special "tribute presentation" by Steve Kelton, reading a paper his father Elmer Kelton gave as the banquet address at the 1988 meeting in Lubbock. You can see all the names of presenters and paper titles by clicking this link:
We last met in Lubbock in 2008, but much has changed in the Hub City in the past decade. Our meeting will be held at the Overton Hotel and Conference Center, which didn't even exist the last time we traveled to West Texas. Click on the following link to go directly to the hotel's reservations page:
As always, our annual meeting is open to anyone who wants to come and learn more about the lore of Texas and the Southwest. We do ask that everyone attending please complete a Registration Form so we know how many people to expect so we can prepare adequately. We have had several TFS members who've been working hard to offer members a unique experience this time around. For the Friday afternoon tour members will have the opportunity to go to three different locations. A trolley will pick groups up beginning at 2:00 p.m. and take them to one of three locations. The first group will be dropped off at one location, then another group will go to a second location, and the last group will be taken to a third location. Once the third group is dropped off, the trolley will begin picking up each group and returning them to the hotel. Details on tour locations, exact pick-up and drop-off times, and event entrance fees will be posted soon.
